Since starting her YouTube channel, the US-based dermatologist has had more than 1.4 billion views and amassed a loyal following of more than 2.7 million people
'I followed someone who did hair colour and I figured if he could have a million followers for his skill then I could too,' Dr Lee, who has more than 2.5 million Instagram followers, told FEMAIL.
'People are interested in learning about this kind of stuff, especially women, and they find it really interesting.
'2.5 years later and I am still growing and I still see it as this amazing, mind-boggling social experiment and I am in the middle of it just seeing where it takes me.
'I still haven't gotten used to it all... I've had people cry when they see me and I just don't see myself as special or a celebrity. It's so weird and still something I have to get u sed to.'
And speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Dr Lee has shared some of her top acne prevention tops and opened up about her ongoing success
Dr Lee said it's been strange having such a broad following - with fans coming up to her wherever she may be in the world.
'I feel like I don't really deserve it but I'm learning how to be better at responding and interacting with people in public,' she said.Â
Pizza won't cause you to get pimples unless you pick the pizza up and rub it all over your face.
'It was weird for my husband when people came up to me in front of him for the first time because he's a dermatologist too... and he doesn't want to just be Mr Dr Pimple Popper.'
Although Dr Lee famously pops, squeezes and treats pimples and cysts on her channel, she urges people to leave their own pimple popping to the experts.Â
'Don't pop your pimples - there is a danger there as you run the risk of infection,' she said.Â
'I do think it's important to note though that there is a perfect time to pop them if you are going to do so and this is when there is a head - or pustule - on the pimple.Â
'I do think it's important to note though that there is a perfect time to pop them [zits] if you are going to do so and this is when there is a head - or pustule - on the pimple,' she saidÂ
'This is because all the puss is at the surface and ready to escape.'
Dr Lee said those who squeeze a pimple when it is just starting to appear will be left with a pimple that is worse, bigger, swollen and more painful.Â
'With pimples the best thing to do is to just use a warm compress on them and be patient,' she said.Â
When it comes to adult acne, Dr Lee said to see a dermatologist as the problem is usually hormonal and/or genetic.
'It's good to have a family dermatologist like you would an electrician or plumber,' Dr Lee said.Â
'It was weird for my husband when people came up to me in front of him for the first time because he's a dermatologist too... and he doesn't want to just be Mr Dr Pimple Popper',' she said
'The thing with adult acne is that it is hormonal and that's why more women experience it than men and it happens often during our cycle,' Dr Lee said

'There are triggers though and stress can exacerbate it. Diet also plays a small role but not so much - I always say that pizza won't cause you to get pimples unless you pick the pizza up and rub it all over your face.'Â
Dr Lee also said that drinking more water or following a vegan or gluten-free diet will most likely make no difference to those who struggle with adult acne.
'Yes it's good to drink water and be hydrated but once you are hydrated, drinking more is only going to lead to more bathroom trips,' she said.Â
Products Dr Lee recommends are topical anti-inflammatory creams like ACZONE and creams with benzyl peroxide in them which fight against the bacteria that cause the red bumps.Â
One of the biggest mistakes many women make, Dr Lee explained, is washing their face too hard and too often (pictured is one of her clients)
One of the biggest mistakes many women make, Dr Lee explained, is washing their face too hard and too often.Â
'Yes you should keep your face relatively clean but don't over-scrub your face. People often over-wash their faces because they think their blackheads or whiteheads are dirt,' she said.Â

'People can also over-do it too if they have cleansers, toners and moisturisers all designed for fighting acne - there is such thing as using too many products at on ce.
'The best thing to do is to just cleanse your face at the end of the day to get the dirt, grime and sweat off, you don't need to do anything drastic.'Â
Another mistake people make is picking at their pimples - consciously or not.Â
'I know from personal experience that not picking at your pimples is really hard,' she said.Â

'But it's best not to do it as it's bad for the skin and can cause damage. The best tip I have, if you are at home and don't need to answer the door, is to put band aids over your pimples,' she said.Â
'Either do that or put some spot cream on them and leave them alone.'Â
For those who struggle with acne as they age, Dr Lee said it's best to use less products on their skin.
'As we age, our skin loses elasticity and oil. When you are younger your skin is at its oiliest and it can therefore withstand more products as it is more resistant,' she explained.Â

'Being inventive and creative is part of being human but more often than not they are not going to work,' she said.Â
'At the end of the day with these gimmicks it's best to not be the first to try it... let the others try it first.'
And for those who find themselves surprised with a last minute unsightly pimple before a big event, there is a way to treat them.Â
'The best thing to do is to see a dermatologist as we have our little tricks that can make them disappear within 24 hours,' she explained.Â

'But there are things, "hacks" if you will, that can help you too.
'Some nasal sprays can decrease redness like Afrin here in the US which can help decrease redness and some over the counter creams can help decrease redness too.'
When it comes to scarring, Dr Lee said that what most people believe as scarring, isn't actually scarring at all.Â
'Those brown or red spots after a pimple has gone down are actually called post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and they go away in time,' she said.Â
'Scarring happens when you have serious acne and it is dealt with incorrectly. It's important to focus on preventing the pimple in the first place as serious s carring is a whole other discussion you need to have with a dermatologist.
'It's permanent and hard to get rid of.'Â

The gel application routine is a three step process - 'wash, dry, apply'.
'I see on a daily basis the negative impact that acne can have on both women and men, it really can shape your personality, particularly if it starts in adolescence and continues into adulthood,' Dr Lee said.Â
'It is important that we help destigmatise and normalise the condition that affects so many Australians and let these people know they donât need to just live with acne, they should go to the GP or dermatologist and discuss the treatment options available to them.'
