Hillsborough and Grenfell lead to manslaughter jail times
Prison terms for those found guilty of negligent manslaughter are set to double in the wake of the Grenfell Tower and Hillsborough disasters.
Judges will be told to issue jail time of up to 18 years by the Sentencing Council, with the current lack of guidelines meaning most terms are set below 10 years.
As a result of the proposals, those who were motivated by financial gain or aware that their actions were likely to cause harm will face the harshest sentences.
The charge is used to prosecute those who have failed in a duty of care and caused a person's death, and can include parents, carers and employers.
In 2016, an inquest into the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy ruled that the 96 Liverpool fans who died had been unlawfully killed, partly due to the actions of police on the day

New rules surrounding manslaughter are set to be introduced next year and will apply to historical cases, the Daily Telegraph reports.
It was announced last week that David Duckenfield, the police officer in charge on the day of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, would be charged with gross negligent manslaughter.Â
In 2016, an inquest into the tragedy ruled that the 96 Liverpool fans who died had been unlawfully killed, partly due to the actions of police on the day.
Meanwhile, it was revealed last month that similar charges were being considered in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire in west London, which killed at least 80.
Everyone from local politicians who ignored warnings to contractors who fitted flammable cladding can expect to be questioned.
Former Director of Public Prosecutions Sir Keir Starmer told BBC1âs Andrew Marr Show: âThere are prosecutors already in, advising the police.
'There are wider regulatory offences, but I think manslaughter is the most serious and thatâs the one that needs to be looked at first.â
