Alarming footage of a group of school aged children playing on a railway line has prompted Network Rail to roll out new technology that will warn mobile phone users approaching level crossings to put their devices away.Â
Network Rail released a compilation of young trespassers walking, taking photos and even lying down on the train tracks by Simpson's Foot Crossing in Sittingbourne, Kent.Â
The release of the video coincides with British Transport Police and Network Rail's introduction of the geo-targeting technology that will alert pedestrian's phones when they are close to a crossing.Â

Risk: Another pair of children lie on flat on the tracksÂ
The rail infrastructure company has also produced a series of virtual reality films which can be used to educate children on the dangers of walking along train tracks.Â
The young people in the footage were identified and the risks they were took on the tracks explained to them by Network Rail community safety manager Nicola Dooris.
She said: 'Many young people simply don't think about the dangers of the railway and parents will know how difficult it is to drag their kids away from their phones or other tech.
'Those two factors together mean that we have a constant battle to get through to children to help them stay out of danger. Anything parents can do to help us could make all the difference.'
In a press release Network R ail revealed that 70% of near misses are due to distraction, with the top three distractions at level crossings highlighted as friends (4%), headphones (20%) and mobile phones (12%).
It read: 'Almost a third (29%) of young adults admit to using their mobile phone while crossing the railway. A huge 95% of under 25 year olds report owning a smart phone and spend twice the amount of time on their mobile than the average user.'Â
In the last five years there have been more than 2,000 incidents on level crossings although the network is still the safest in Europe.Â
