Qatar's royal family buys NY mansion for $41M for maids

Qatar's royal family has reportedly bought their third property in New York that will be used for their loyal servants.

The nation purchased the home from billionaire Andrew Farkas, who is the founder of real estate merchant bank Island Capital Group, according to Curbed. 

Qatar paid $41 million for the townhouse located at 12 E 73rd Street despite the asking price of $42.5 million when it first hit the market last June 2016.

The sale of the 10,400-square-foot home closed in January of this year.

'Andrew sold it to Qatar directly, with no broker involved,' a real estate source said. According to local reports, the nation bought the home because it sits adjacent from two other properties that were bought by Qatar

'They bought it because it backs directly onto their property at 7-9 East 72nd St,' according to a source. 'Andrew spent no expense renovating the place, but apparently it will be used for maids' quarters'. The townhouse overlooks parts of Manhattan as it features a comfy roof top

'Andrew sold it to Qatar directly, with no broker involved,' a real estate source told PageSix.  

According to local reports, the nation bought the home because it sits adjacent from two other properties that were bought by Qatar. 

'They bought it because it backs directly onto their property at 7-9 East 72nd St,' according to the news site. 

'Andrew spent no expense renovating the place, but apparently it will be used for maids' quarters.'

According to Curbed, the home was renovated within the last 10 years by Daniel Romual dez, the interior designer behind Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP's 252 East 57th Street and Robert A.M. Stern’s 70 Vestry.

The palatial turn-of-the-century limestone mansion, which was originally designed by Henry Allan Jacobs, sits on one of Manhattan's most desired townhouse blocks. 

According to Corcoran's website, the home's interior features five stories plus a finished English basement. 

The exterior spaces include a lavish 500sqft south-facing garden, a terrace off the master bedroom and a landscaped roof terrace with a kitchen that is 922sqft with views of Central Park and the iconic New York skyline.

Perfectly situated just off Fifth Avenue and Central Park on East 73rd Street, on one of the Manhattan’s most desired townhouse blocks, this palatial turn-of-the-century limestone mansion was originally designed by Henry Allan Jacobs

The nation's other two townhouses sat next to each other at one point before they were renovated. 

Those properties were purchased by the emir of Qatar, for $26 million in 2002 after the Lycée Français private school moved to a new location, acco rding to Curbed.

The properties underwent construction to be combined into one large mansion, which may be one of the largest in Manhattan.

After the mega-mansion's renovation was completed, the home featured an indoor swimming pool, two floors of bedrooms, a maze of foyers and an 8,500-square-foot roof area.
