Girl suffers head injuries at 'Peace Movement' party

A teenager suffered horrific head injuries after allegedly being thrown down a flight of stairs and hit with a bottle at a party dedicated to peace.

Niva Garland, 17, was at a Peace Movement Secret Warehouse Party in Liverpool, Merseyside, last weekend when she was knocked down the stairs by men believed to be running from a fight.

The beauty therapy student says she was then hit by a flying bottle, cutting open her head. Police are investigating.

Adverts for the party proclaimed that it would 'infest your mind with peace, love and happiness', with 'peace and love graffiti artwork and positive quotes on all three floors'.

But teenager Niva told how the event turned into a nightmare less than a hour after she arrived on Saturday evening.

She said: 'There was blood all over me. I was just so terrified. The bottle didn't smash. It just bounced off my head. I put my hand on my head and looked at my hand - it was covered in blood.

'The blood then just started pouring down over me. It just started squirting down all over me and it wasn't stopping.

'I was just covered straight away. I had a long gash on my head and under my eye. It all just happened so fast so I can't remember the order of events.

'I remember getting up after falling down the stairs, then getting hit over the head with the bottle. We'd barely been in the club 45 minutes.

'My first instinct was to check my teeth were still in - and to check I hadn't broken my nose. When I saw the blood over my hand I just started panicking. I had a panic attack right there.'

She was treated at the scene by a paramedic before her mother Vivien Garland took her daughter to Whiston Hospital at around 1am.

Pottery artist Ms Garland, 44, said: 'When I arrived she was covered in blood and people were crowding round her - there was just blood everywhere.

'I'm just so angry at what's happened. It was at a peace event so you would have thought she would have been safe.'

Barry Walker, who runs the Peace Movement, said he will be taking flowers and chocolates to Niva after the upsetting incident.

Mr Walker said: 'After a year of trading this is the first incident we have had.

'Thankfully the girl was not seriously hurt. I am going to take flowers, chocolates and a card to her today.'

He added: 'We do not know the location for our next event but we will be using ID scanners and a password protection on the online ticket sales and the front door to try and prevent anything like this from ever happening again.

'It is such a shame that a couple of people want to fight at an event like this with such a good vibe.'

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: 'At about 0.40am, a report was received that an 17-year-old female had fallen down stairs and been struck by a bottle.

'The female fell while an assault was reportedly happening nearby. She sustained a cut to the head and face and was treated in hospital before being discharged. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.'

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service said: 'We were called at 27 minutes past midnight to someone who had a cut on the side of her head.

'A rapid responder vehicle was sent to the scene. It became clear the patient was making her own way to the hospital, so nobody was taken to hospital.'
