Horrific footage has emerged of three masked men savagely attacking a driver with an axe in broad daylight. 

The shocking video, thought to have been filmed in Birmingham, shows a masked man repeatedly punching the victim in a silver car.

The gang then crowd around the vehicle and one rushes to the back of the car to take an axe out of the boot before launching a barbaric assault.

The footage shows the thug hacking at the man with the axe nine times. 

In the clip, which is described online as a 'revenge axe attack', the victim pleads with the gang to stop but to no avail.

Despite the brutal nature of the assault, the victim tries to fight back and lashes out with his arms and legs to try and push the men away. 

It is unclear if the attack took place on a public road, but the video is filmed by another motorist from his driver's seat.

The 46-second video was first published on Monday and the identities of the individuals are not yet known.

The footage has already been viewed more than 595,000 times with people condemning the violence in the clip. 

Some shocked viewers said they believed the attack happened in Birmingham, while others thought it was in London and a feud between rival drug gangs.

Both both the Metropol itan Police and West Midlands Police said they had not received any calls relating to the video and they did not know where it had been filmed.
