From avocado bath suites to pebbledash wallpaper, what's in and what's out can quickly change in the interior design world.

But one mother sparked a massive debate after revealing her pet hates when it comes to modern decorating trends.

Taking to Mumsnet, she listed bowls of pebbles on coffee tables, photographs printed onto canvases and diamanté-effect furniture as major no-nos.

While others on the parenting forum were quick to back her up and add their own peeves, some appeared surprised - admitting they were guilty of having utilised some of the design choices she'd sneered at in their own homes.

The trend for ornamental words such as 'Love', 'Eat' and 'Bathe' seemed to hit a particular nerve with Mumsnet users.

One wrote: 'Massive word ornaments. Eg RELAX in ceramic capitals placed above the bath or LOVE sitting on the mantelpiece.'

Another added: 'Bon Appetite (sic) on a kitchen wall. No self respecting French person would even entertain such w***ery.'

Other home furnishings that came under fire included brown leather sofas and crystal doorknobs, as well as decorative twigs.

Meanwhile, particular colour schemes were also considered a pet peeve - with one Mumsnet user simply posting: 'Grey. Grey. Grey. Grey. Grey.'

Design decisions that were once considered bang on-trend are apparently now a big no-no, with feature walls and 'shabby chic' furniture' falling into this category.

During the heated debate, some defended their taste in home furnishings, with one writing: 'I actually love most of these decor ideas!!!

'My old house had neutral walls and furniture and then a feature colour per room.'

Listing some of the items criticised by other Mumsnet users, another wrote: 'Oh dear. I have glitter grey wallpaper, crystal knobs on bedroom furniture, crushed velvet headboard with diamante buttons, candles, canvas art AND... Bon appetite (sic) in my kitchen.

'In my defence it was already there when I bought the house.'
