Woman cures her 20 years of chronic insomnia suffering

A woman who suffered from chronic insomnia for two decades says she has cured herself - by shedding over half of her body fat.

Dee Miller, 37, who is from Scotland but lives in London, was often lacking in energy and made poor diet choices as a result, as she battled with her inability to sleep.

Often skipping breakfast and lunch, the busy executive survived on shop-bought sandwiches, washed down with up to 12 cups of tea a day.

She finally decided to 'get her life back', and lost 1st 7lbs  in five and a half months by embarking on a strict diet and training programme.

Dee said she is now in the best shape of her life having also cured her childhood psoriasis, and added: 'I'm 37 - I now have measurements smalle r than I did when I was 26.

'I've knocked 11 years off my age in terms of being physically stronger, fitter; my head game is like when I left university.'

Dee turned to body composition experts Ultimate Performance to help her reverse the damage caused by her busy lifestyle, sporadic diet, hectic work schedule and chronic sleep problems.

Having previously lain awake until 4am every night, Dee, who is head of international media operations at a large firm, typically now goes to bed at 11pm and wakes up at 7am, after enjoying a full eight hours sleep.

No sleep and burned out

'From no sleeping, I would say my memory started to go a little bit and I was quite shocked with that.

DEE'S NEW DIET PLAN

Dee was skipping breakfast and lunch and surviving on shop-bought sandwiches and up to 12 cups of tea a day.

Now she eats three meals a day specified to training, non-training and 'refeed' days.

EXAMPLE: Training day plan

  • Breakfast: Salmon and green vegetables
  • Lunch: Chicken breast, green vegetables and almond butter
  • Dinner: Chicken breast, green vegetables and a sweet potato
  • Snacks: Berries, paleo protein shake

'I didn't even know what I was eating. I'm 37 years old and I've finally realised that I knew very little about how my body worked and I know very little about food.'

Although, happy with her successful career she was in danger of burning out when she realised neither her diet nor her lifestyle were sustainable.

But with the help of weekly personal training sessions and a nutrition plan Dee has completely changed her mindset.

'I'd never seen food as fuel before. I'd seen it as this inconvenience that I had to do in between trying to do everything else,' she said.

'I don't consider myself on a diet. I've not been told to cut things out.

'Now my week includes lots of steak, chicken, burgers if I want to - and a lot of smoked salmon.

'My breakfasts are smo ked salmon and spinach. It's decadent, but it makes me really happy.'

Her daily exercise routines are made up of weight training - featuring sumo deadlifts, hip thrusts, leg presses, sled dragging and ab crunches.

TRAINING SESSION

Sumo deadlift  - 4 x sets of 6-8 reps

60D Press - 4 x sets of 6-8 reps

Hamstring curl - 4 x sets 8-10 reps

Seated machine shoulder press - 4 x sets of 8-10 reps

Cure for psoriasis

She even credits her new nutrition p lan to also helping cure her psoriasis, the skin condition that she'd had since the age of 14.

'I've had medication, the doctors have put me on sun beds, but just by being healthier, less stressed and eating better it's solved a problem.'

Dee says that there is 'no excuse' when it comes to your health, pointing out that the money she so often spent on taxi journeys, bottles of wine or after-work drinks over a three-month period soon added up to the more than the cost of her personal training sessions.

Worth the money

For her it was worth every penny: 'It's an expensive outlay but there's so much that goes into it.

'Everything you do here is focused on your results. You're not guaranteed anything. What you put in, you get out.'

Dee said her life has changed immeasurably, and added that she feels 'braver' and more confident in everything she does.

'I find myself being braver in meetings at work. I'm more confident and I speak up for myself,' she said.

'By having physical strength, my mental strength has improved. Having that control - nothing compares to it. It's fantastic.'
