Mystery over one-legged British sailor found in Atlantic
A one-legged British sailor in a 'confused mental state' has been rescued from the Atlantic after being found adrift in a yacht.
Ross Beasley, from Wales, was rescued 200 miles off the coast of Portugal after an Italian catamaran crew found him drifting without engine power or electricity in a busy shipping lane.
Mr Beasley was found wearing 'a primitive life jacket', believed there were other people on the boat with him and told his rescuers that he was on the run from gangsters, it is reported.
Ross Beasley, a one-legged pensioner from Wales, was found floating on yacht Doolou in a busy shipping lane off the coast of Portugal before being saved
A woman using the pen name Isolar Pacifico, who was among the rescuers, recounted the strange tale to yachting magazine Tutto Barche.
She had been at sea for 25 days on board the Kaskazi Four sailing from the Bahamas to the Mediterranean when they sighted the Doolou floating with a torn jib.
The vessel did not show up on radar and was at risk of being hit by a cargo ship, so Pacifico said she and her crew investigated and found Mr Beasley on board.
Wearing a makeshift life jacket, he told them he had 'no radio, no engine, no electricity' and agreed to be boarded.
But once on board the Doolou, Pacifico and her crew discover that the man apparently cannot remember his name, does not know what port he left from, and believes they have come to arrest him.
He claims to have been at sea for three weeks, and has lots of old clothes on board, but there is no sign of food or fresh water.
He was taken to Portimao (pictured) after being unable to tell his rescuers his name or how he had got lost at sea, and believed gangsters were coming after him
Mr Beasley also believed there were other men on board his boat and claimed to be on the run from gangsters. He asked for the crew of the Kaskazi Four to send a May Day message for him, and insisted he wanted to be left adrift.
But seeing his confused state and the danger he was in, Pacifico wrote that they had no choice but to fix tow-lines to his boat and haul him for 13 hours to the Portuguese port of Portimao.
On the journey the Italians discovered that the Doolou was registered in Gibraltar to a pensioner from Wales, who they identified as Mr Beasley.
This is not the first time Mr Beasley has been found adrift in the ocean.
Back in 2013 the coast guard in Dorset received a May Day call for a yacht called the Doolou which was found without radio, engines or power, lost in fog.Â
