Female soldiers are victim to sex attacks twice a week

Distressing pictures have come to light which show a female RAF recruit subjected to an appalling sexually-charged initiation ceremony.

The images show Rebecca Crookshank, who was just 21, held in the air as her naked male colleagues at RAF Mount Alice in the Falklands throw her around and press against her.

Ms Crookshank, now 36, was the only female among some 28 males at the base in 2001 and has released the photos to expose sexual harassment in the military.

She said she was first greeted by a row of men exposing their buttocks, adding: 'It was the beginning of a dark time'.

She says she later had a personnel meeting with an officer in her bedroom, who convinced her to keep quiet by offering her a flight on a Tornado F3.

Ms Crookshank told MailOnline: 'With women now able to serve on the front line and sexual abuse claims on the rise it is clear that the military are not doing enough.

'Training which encourages equality in the work place and zero tolerance of sexual abuse, harassment and bullying needs to be addressed from basic training and beyond.

'The abhorrent behaviour I experienced in 2001 may be a long time ago to some but it has had a huge impact on my life and I will not be silenced.

'If one other human being reads my story and finds the courage to speak out about their personal experience of abuse in the military or any workplace for that matter, then together we can move closer to a change in behavio ur, zero tolerance of injustice, a positive shift in the face of adversity.'

She also claimed corporals had sex with young female trainees.

Female soldiers are victim to sex attacks twice a WEEK: Military police launched 113 probes into rape claims just last year

Figures obtained under Freedom of Information laws show between 2012 and 2017 there was a total of 363 sexual abuse allegations made across the army, air and sea cadet forces, both historical and current.

Of these 282 cases have been referred to the police and 99 instructors have been dismissed as a result of claims against them.

To date the MoD has paid out over £2 million to victims of the abuse, according to the programme.

According to the MoD, military police launched at least 113 investigations into claims of rape, se xual assault and harassment last year.

Meanwhile, cases of sexual abuse within the Ministry of Defence's cadets were reportedly covered up.

A recent investigation by BBC Panorama reportedly found that officials had dissuaded victims from reporting allegations to the police.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said child abuse was an 'abhorrent crime' and it has 'robust procedures in place to protect cadets'.

The programme spoke with former cadets who said they were abused in the 1980s.

When concerns were raised by some of the victims or their loved ones they were reportedly urged not to tell the police.

Rebecca Sheriff, of law firm Bolt Burdon Kemp, which is representing victims, said: 'A number of abuse cover-ups have been discovered within the organisation with devastating consequences upon v ictims which ought never to have occurred.'
