100-foot wave engulfs the bow of a ship in the North Sea

This is the terrifying moment a 100-foot crashed over the bow of a ship during a fierce storm.

The footage, filmed in the North Sea from one of the upper decks, captures the monster wave loom high in front of the vessel before breaking over the front.

Had the ship been much smaller it could have been catastrophic, but it managed to withstand the blow.

While most passengers would be cowering in fear, the man behind the camera is heard laughing with manic glee as the wave lurches forward.

'That's f***ing awesome!' exclaims the man, who appears to be British.

The view over the ocean is obscured by the time the wave gushes over the bow and smashes into the window of the upper cabin.

The stomach-churning footage, which has been viewed more than 5.4 million times on YouTube, earned plenty of reaction.

'I'm in the Navy, and I would s**t my pants if I saw that,' one commented.

'Can you imagine being a sailor back in the day of wooden ships and something like this shows up?' another mused.

The North Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, is located between the UK, Scandinavia, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.

During the winter months, gales, storms and mammoth waves are a frequent occurrence in these parts.

Footage of this dramatic nature, however, is rare.
