A quad bike gang dragged a father from his car and broke his spine during a savage road rage attack.

The father of three, 48, was brutally assaulted in front of his horrified family after allegedly beeping his horn at the thugs on a road in Coventry, West Midlands.

They then went onto smash up his Mercedes before fleeing the scene, leaving their victim needing two weeks of hospital care.

West Midlands Police has launched an investigation into the shocking incident.

But the man's family have slammed emergency services for their response, claiming that police officers took two hours to reach the scene.

His brother said he was attacked by about seven yobs on quad bikes.

He told the Coventry Telegraph: 'They were swerving in and out of traffic and he beeped his horn at them and one of them kicked his wing mirror.Â

'They then put a brick through his back window so he had to pull over.

'They then laid in to him and drove over him in one of the quad bikes.'Â

Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Bennett from Coventry Police, apologised for the officers' delay.

He said: 'On Sunday (9 July), at around 4.50pm, we received a report of an assault and damage to a vehicle where a man had sustained serious injuries.Â Officers were not available to attend until 6.45pm.Â

'We are currently looking into CCTV that has been seized from the location and have taken statements from witnesses to establish what has happened.Â

'Regrettably on this occasion we have fallen below the standards that we expect. We fully understand the victim and his family's anguish and like them, we want to bring these offenders to justice as quickly as possible.Â

'We are aware of concerns from within the community of quad bikes being used in an anti-social manner and want to assure you that we are cracking down on this behaviour.Â

'We wou ld encourage anyone who has dash cam footage or CCTV to send it to us.Â
