It is believed that some investors have been ordered to pay £750,000 to £1.5million in tax and two up to £7million.

The retired players invested their cash with Ingenious, an asset management firm.

However, there is no evidence that they are at fault for the losses.

Xpro, a welfare group for retired players, said many of the pros could be financially finished by their tax bill.

Xpro boss Geoff Scott told the Mirror: 'We are trying to find them help. Many were not on big contracts, and have modest lifestyles now. We need to get players better advice right across the game.

'We had to point some to debt advisors who tell them the best wa y of going bankrupt, and that is a sorry state of affairs.'
