Mickey Mouse tells foster children they are adopted
Walt Disney World lived up to its reputation as the happiest place on Earth, at least for two overjoyed foster children who were surprised with the wonderful news that they had been adopted by Mickey Mouse himself.Â
Foster parents Tom and Courtney Gilmour, from Portland, Pennsylvania, wanted to give Janielle, 12, and her 10-year-old brother Elijah a memorable gift during their visit to the Orlando resort, and couldn't think of a better way to reveal the exciting adoption news to the pair - making sure to catch the emotional moment on camera.
In a video posted to Facebook by mom Courtney earlier this month, which has since racked up more than two million views, Janielle and Elijah are seen paying a visit to Mickey for an autograph signing, excited, and yet completely unaware about the life-changing news they are about to be given.
The big reveal: Foster kids Janielle, 12, and her 10-year-old brother Elijah were surprised with the news that they had been adopted during a trip to Walt Disney World in FloridaÂ
The clip, which was actually filmed back in April, follows the children as they go to meet Mickey, who is wearing a magician's outfit, and offers to sign their autograph books, before inviting the brother-sister duo to pose for pictures with him.Â
Disney favorite Mickey then suggests that he perform a magic trick for the delighted siblings, who quickly agree to help him as he holds up some large playing cards - and proceeds to mess up the trick several times, leaving the kids in fits of giggles.Â
The trio then pose happily for pictures before Mickey invites the two foster parents to join them, not wanting Courtney and Tom to miss out on the fun.Â
Someone behind the camera then announces: 'Our friend Mickey has something really special to share with you guys!'Â Â
What? The children were left open-mouthed in shock after Mickey Mouse himself helped to deliver the news about their adoption
Happy families: Proud parents Tom and Courtney Gilmour, from Portland, Pennsylvania, posed with their adopted children - and Mickey Mouse - just after the surprise
Both children are asked to 'stand with Mickey', before a helper holds up a small sign and asks them to read it out.Â
'Your adoption da-' Elijah starts to read from the sign, before both kids gasp in shock, their mouths open in surprise.Â
The kids both break down in tears of joy, with Janielle doubling over with emotion, receiving a warm hug from Mickey, before her new parents rush in to celebrate the moment with a warm embrace.Â
Wiping away their tears for long enough to pose for a family portrait with Mickey Mouse, the children and their new parents all celebrate with one last hug from the beloved Disney character, all while their aunt Vicky catches the special moment on camera. Â Â
It really is the happiest place on Earth! The family was overjoyed with how the day went
Helping hand: Courtney hopes that sharing the video of their experience will help to raise awareness about the fostering and adoption process
According to mom Courtney, however, filming the joyful occasion wasn't just about ensuring that the family would remember the day forever.Â
Courtney explained to Reuters that she posted the video with the hope of drawing attention to the foster care system and encouraging other people to get involved.Â
Speaking to Fox 13, she noted: 'Being a former foster child myself and now a foster/adopt mother, it's very important we don't forget there is lots of help needed.'Â
She added that adoption day itself, which took place on May 25, was 'very emotional, but perfect', saying: 'We had lots of friends and family there and was just joyous.'
Gilmour says to families who want to adopt or foster: 'Focus on the positive of the process. It's super hard at times, but it is super rewarding,' she said.
