NPR Tweets Declaration of Independence, Triggers Outrage
To commemorate the Fourth of July and what the holiday represents, National Public Radio filled its Twitter feed with the words of the Declaration of Independence.
The broadcaster tweeted out the words of the declaration line-by-line Tuesday. But tweets went unrecognized by some.
People tweeted that NPRâs thread was trash, that it was inciting revolution and was a reason the public organization should be defunded.
Some seemed to imply that the thread was directed at President Donald Trump.
Just as the tweets got to the part about the colonists' frustration with British rule, someone tweeted, "Are you drunk? Your silly tweets make your state of mind questionable."
One person thought NPR was starting a revolution when it quoted the founders' idea that it should be the right of the people to alter or abolish destructive governments. "So, NPR is calling for revolution. Interesting way to condone the violence while trying to sound 'patriotic'. Your implications are clear."
The user apologized after the misunderstanding was pointed out.
Another asked if the tweet was talking about the U.S. current foreign agenda, asking if Americans were the tyrants.
Others were under the impression NPR was trying to provoke Trump with the tweets and praised the outlet for doing so. Many, recognizing it was the Declaration of Independence, said how history is repeating itself.
NPR has broadcast its reading of the declaration every Independence for 29 years. This is the first year the tradition has been extended to Twitter.
