Student conquers her 'unhealthy' relationship with food

A university student who went from super skinny to super-ripped says she is 'the happiest she's ever been' - after gaining two stone and building muscle.

Amie Wiley, 18, from London, decided to switch up her fitness routine from gruelling cardio to weights, despite fearing that lifting would make her 'too bulky'.

Before changing her regime two years ago, the French and Psychology student weighed 8st 9lbs, constantly dieted, avoided carbs and would only eat small amounts of protein.

Now a super sculpted 10st 9lbs, Claire, who is originally from Co. Clare, Ireland, eats a healthy diet packed full of protein, carbs and good fats - but still allows herself the occasional 'treat'.

She has documented her astonishing fitness transformation on social media, garnering more than 10,000 followers on her two Instagram channels with updates of her gruelling gym sessions.

Amie reflected on her transformation in a recent post, saying: 'Back in 2015 I decided to make the transition from cardio to weights. I just loved the idea of being toned and leaner and not just being a skinny girl who would just go to the gym to run on the treadmill or go on the cross trainer for hours.

'Personally, I enjoy weights much more than cardio. You don't just benefit physically from weights but you benefit mentally as well.

'Usually girls would shy away from using weights in fear of getting 'too big' or 'too bulky' but that cannot be further from the truth.

'Weights make me feel strong and confident much more than cardio ever did.

'I also prefer the more toned version of me thanks to weights rather than the skinny me that used to overdo it on the cardio.'

Amie works out five days a week at the gym, hitting different body areas each time she goes. She says that the biggest problem she had to overcome was dealing with other people's opinions.

'At the moment, I am doing a three day spilt which is known as push (chest, shoulders, triceps), pull (back, biceps), and then legs,' she explained.

'However, I love to train legs so I must admit that I focus much more on legs than any other part of my body.

'I have become more aware of portion sizes and I now make sure that my diet is much higher in protein.

'After starting university last September, I let myself go and gaine d a bit of weight and since getting back into the gym and being consistent with my exercise and eating I try to ensure that I eat as healthy as I can.

'However, I try not to restrict myself from the enjoyments of food at the same time. If I want a chocolate bar I will have it. It's good to treat yourself every once in a while, but I make sure I don't wander off track and I eat in moderation.'

Amie added: 'Believe it or not, one major thing I had to overcome was how much I cared about the opinions of others. I have a fitness dedicated account on Instagram (@amie_fit_).

'The reason why I have only recently set it up was because I was afraid of the opinions of others. I am from a really small town in Co. Clare in Ireland and if anyone does anything out of the ordinary it is the talk of the town.

'It took me over two and a half years to overcome the fear of what people would think of me and set up my Instagram page.'

Proud: Amie reflected on her transformation, saying: 'I've gone from very skinny with an unhealthy relationship with food eating far too little for what I needed to be eating'

Proud Amie says: 'I love my whole journey so far because from each stage I have learned something and I am now the happiest I have ever been In my life and I love the shape I am in

The gym enthusiast added: 'I can now say it is the best thing I have ever done and I am so proud of it.

'Everyone on my Instagram is so used to seeing my physique right now but then when I post a transformation picture and they see how far I've come in my fitness journey, they are quite taken back by it.

'Everyone starts from somewhere and that's what I love about transformation pictures because it shows that it is achievable for anyone but it just takes time, effort and consistency to reach your goals with exercise.

'Everyone that goes to the gym is there to better themselves so don't be afraid and just go do it.'
