When it comes to classic British meals, you might think of fish and chips, afternoon tea, or steamed puddings - not mince on toast.

But this was exactly the dish that American food website Eater suggested was a 'quintessential' UK staple on Twitter yesterday.

It prompted hundreds of foodies to roundly mock the website for promoting the odd meal as a British classic, saying they had never even heard of or tried the dish.

Even TV cook Nigella Lawson waded into the debate - and bizarrely confessed that she's partial to the meal.

The furore began after Eater.com tweeted a link to a recipe video for mince on toast with the caption: 'Mince meat on toast is a quintessential British comfort classic.'

Immediately, baffled British foodies were mocking the website for suggesting that the strange meal was commonly eaten in the UK.

Journalist Jackie Leonard wrote: 'No British person has ever eaten this.'

And Neil Clayton added: 'Never ever ever ever ever, ever ever in a month of Sundays ever ever has anyone in Britain eaten this mess.'

Some have claimed that eating minced meat on toast is a commonly eaten dish in some parts of the north east of England - but it is certainly not a recognisable classic

Prominent food critic Jay Rayner also added his two cents, and said: 'For god's sake, Eater, what are you on? Apart from mince on toast, something I have never eaten.'

Nigella Lawson also set the record straight by telling Eater that mince on toast is not a classic British dish.

But she confessed: 'Not a classic, but delish. (Also good: next-day cold mince in a sandwich.) I'm v keen on oxtail on toast too.'

A few were adamant that the dish is in fact commonly eaten in villages in the north-east of England.

But others from the north were just as insistent that they had never even heard of mince on toast.

Others said the only times they had eaten it was as a student when they had run out of pasta, or when drunk.

Eater.com later clarified with a tweet that said: 'Forgive us. It's more accurate to say it's a quintessentially British dish, rather than a British *classic*.'

However, British foodies still weren't buying it.

'Still no,' said journalist and editor Karl Smith.

Eater's tweet was a link to a recipe video that shows London-based chef Shean Searley making mince on toast at his restaurant, Quality Chop House.

'It really does take you back to when your mother was cooking a mince on the stove,' host Nick Solares says. 'It's so evocative.'

Solares declares it is a 'traditional British dish' - but the hoardes of bewildered Brits on Twitter have certainly quashed that view.
