Wetherspoons pub sniffed out by a rat

Horrifying footage captured the moment a rat perched on a seat at a busy Wetherspoons.

The video, taken at the James Watt pub in Greenock, Inverclyde, west Scotland, shows the creature scurrying around one of the dark leather booths on the premises.

The nine-second clip was uploaded to Facebook today after the rodent was spotted in the popular establishment.

The pest can be seen scurrying along the seat of the empty booth before abruptly coming to a halt.

It stands up slightly, as if perusing the menu, or perhaps planning to jump onto the wooden table.

But the critter changes its mind and darts down below the table onto the carpet before disappearing from sight.

Faceb ook users were disgusted at the rat's presence.

One social media user wrote: 'I don't eat out of there but I'll never drink in there either, f*** that!'.

Another said: 'Oh my god, that's vile.'

While another added: 'Hope this doesn't affect the pitchers!'

Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon said: 'There has been some demolition work taking place in the area and, as a result, rats are a common problem on the high street at the moment.

'A single rat literally walked in the open front door of the pub. The pub closed early at 10pm and the area was cleaned.

'Our pest control team have been working in the pub this morning and confirm that there are no issues. They will return to check the situation again next week.

'The pub is open and trading as usual. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.'
