Great-grandmother-of-19 celebrates her 101st birthday

A leather-clad great-grandmother has led a motorbike gang through the streets of Liverpool to celebrate her 101st birthday.

Maud Cartlidge, who has fond memories of riding on the back of her father's motorbike when she was a child, was surprised when the convoy turned up at her Autumn Lodge care home on Sunday.

The event, organised by biker Paul Green via Facebook, drew riders from hundreds of miles away.

The bikers presented Maud with a motorbike statue with a plaque saying 'Happy 101st Birthday, Maud' and she promised to put it in the lounge of the care home.

The centenarian rode pillion on the back of a trike and was overwhelmed by the turnout.

Maud said: 'It's very exciting, I lo ve the noise the bikes make. I'm very overwhelmed but that ride was amazing; it's so nice to not be forgotten.'

Maud, who has lived in the Walton area of the city all her life, had her family by her side as she rode away with the convoy.

Many of the bikers bought cards and flowers to help Maud celebrate her special day.

Her daughter Carol, 72, said: 'I'm extremely proud of mum, she's been a fantastic mum and gran to all her family.

'I'm amazed so many people have turned out today and we're very overwhelmed, I can't thank them enough for what they've done for mum.

'Mum spent her youth on the back of my father's bike riding pillion. They had a motorbike and sidecar and for their silver wedding anniversary they took the bike to Norway and had a fantastic holiday.'

Maud married her husband, Eli, in 1940 and the couple had three children: Dorothy, Carol and Susan.

Maud has seven grandchildren - Gillian, Neil, Jackie, Helen, James, Sarah and John - and 19 great-grandchildren.

Grandson John brought Maud's youngest great-grandchild - one-year-old Honor - down to the event.

John said: 'It's amazing, what a turnout; it's brilliant that everyone can rally together and create something like this to support my nan on her 101st birthday.

'It just shows what a great community it is.'
