Llangollen man erects bird box in shape of speed camera

A grandfather left in a flap over speeding drivers has disguised a bird box as a speed camera in an attempt to slow them down.

John Lewis from Llangollen, North Wales built the bird box after the road became 'like wacky races' and he feared someone would get hurt.

The 79-year-old has for years worried someone will be killed on the road but claims the problem has got worse.

He installed the box in his garden overlooking the A5 in Berwyn Road, Llangollen, north Wales on Monday.

Mr Lewis said: 'There had been farm buildings down the road but they were demolished a few years ago when a new factory was built

'Since then, the visibility has improved a lot and it has been like Wacky Races.

'They have moved the 30mph zone twice but people are ignoring it and I'm afraid there is going to be one hell of an accident here.

'One person hit my wall last year. Somebody is going to get hurt and it will be too late.'

Mr Lewis said the fake camera, which is already home to two families of sparrows, did get traffic to slow down at first but admitted motorists have already begun to ignore it.

However, the presence of his feathered friends means it's staying. 'I'm not going to disturb them, so it's here forever,' he said.

He is ready for trouble with the authorities over his DIY speed camera.

'I hope the council comes down and tells me off for this. I will give them a piece of my mind. I have been in touch with the county and town councils about doing something over the last few years, but nothing has been done about it.'

Mr Lewis has been so worried about speeding motorists that when he has visitors he stands in the road to help them out.

'I am taking my life in my hands, but I have to make sure my granddaughters are safe when wanting to drive onto the road,' he said.

A council spokesman was unavailable for comment.
