UK Weather: Britain to be hotter than the Algarve today

Britain is set to be hotter than the Algarve this weekend as temperatures soar in London and the South East.

Southern parts of the UK will see temperatures rise to 84F (29 degrees) today while tomorrow will see highs of 75F (24 degrees) and then 77F (25 degrees) on Sunday, according to the Met Office.

Meanwhile in Faro, Portugal, a popular holiday destination for Britons, the temperature will rise to just 78F (26 degrees) this afternoon.

A weather forecaster for the Met Office said: 'Yesterday was hot and we had a few thunderstorms in parts of the UK, but today is calmer.

'There will be sunshine in the South East while there will is expected to be some cloud in the North of England and North Wales.

'Saturday is expected to be dry and cloudy across the UK but Sunday will be a bit more unsettled with showers in the Northern parts of England and Wales.

'Temperatures are expected to rise to 69F (21 degrees) in the North on Saturday and Sunday.'

However, forecasters expect a mixture of sunshine and showers across Britain on Monday with temperatures dropping to 73F (23 degrees) in the South and 64F (18 degrees) in the North.

The change in weather come after Eastern parts of the UK were hit with thunderstorms last night after yellow weather warnings were issued. 

Schools in Norwich were forced to close today after thunderstorms and lightning struck.

Harford Manor School, with 83 pupils in Ipswich Road, Norwich, posted a message online to parents last night saying 'Sorry to report that HMS is closed tomorrow, we've had a terrible flood and there is a fault with the electrics, just not safe.' 

Meanwhile nearly 600 children were evacuated from Robert Kett Junior School in Wymondham, near Norwich, yesterday afternoon after lightning hit the building.

Karen Hurst, the school's business manager, said they believed lightning had struck a lightning conductor on the roof of the main one-storey school building.

It created a power surge, which blew the school's alarm system.

Mrs Hurst said: 'During the storm we believe that the lightning struck our lightning conductor, which does a fantastic job of keeping us safe.

'We evacuated the children as a precaution until it was deemed to be safe.

'It w as lightning followed by a very loud thunder clap, which immediately set off our emergency alarms.'
