National Geographic reveals this year's best travel photos

A hauntingly beautiful image of a lightning strike shooting from a volcano's ash cloud has earned Sergio Tapiro Velasco the title of 2017 National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year.

Mexico-based Velasco's aptly named 'The Power of Nature' won both the nature and grand-prize categories, selected from over 15,000 entries from more than 30 countries.

He shot the picture of the erupting Volcan de Colima, one of Mexico's most active volcanoes, from 12km away after he heard a deafening boom from the 'Volcano of Fire'.

Velasco had no idea he had taken what he deems 'an impossible photograph' until he was reviewing the photographs.

The annual contest recognises and celebrates spectacular photos taken within the last two years in three categories: Nature, People and Cities.

F Dilek Uyar won the 'people' category with an image of a Dervish man - part of a Muslim order known for taking vows of poverty - performing a mesmeric dance inside a temple in Sille, Turkey.

A photo of a pristine and futuristic library in Stuttgart, entitled 'Levels of Reading', won the 'cities' category.

Other noteworthy images included an underwater surfer, underground caverns made of marble and what is quite possibly the most stunning football pitch in the world in Norway's Lofoten Islands.

They say beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, so which one strikes you most?
