Trump Joins Senators in Bid to Cut Legal Immigration

U.S. President Donald Trump and two Republican senators have announced a proposed new law to reduce legal immigration.

Speaking Wednesday at the White House, Trump said the United States has for decades "operated a very low-skilled immigration" and the new system being sought would operate as a points-based system that would take into account the applicants' ability to speak English and provide for themselves when considering their green card applications.

“This legislation demonstrates our compassion for struggling American families," Trump said. "It puts their needs first and puts America first.”

The legislation, Trump said, is meant to protect "minority workers competing for jobs against brand new arrivals" and will give those workers a raise by reducing the number of unskilled workers entering the U.S.

Earlier this year, Senators Tom Cotton and David Perdue introduced legislation that would cut legal immigration from 1 million to 500,000 people each year.

The bill, which has not moved through the Senate, also calls for limiting the admission of migrants' family members, ending the diversity visa lottery program, and making the process of obtaining “green cards” more difficult.

Cotton said that just one in 15 immigrants come to America due to their job skills, and curbing low-skilled immigration would help American workers attain a higher standard of living and support overall economic growth.

“I think it’s a symbol that we’re not committed to working class Americans," he said, referring to the current system.

Trump has met twice with the senators to discuss the legislation, which is aimed at fulfilling one of his main policy goals in reforming America’s legal immigration system.
