World premiere of 'Brad's Status' is part of Toronto film fest's Platform lineup
The Toronto International Film Festival announced Thursday the lineup for this yearâs Platform section. Now in its third year, the juried competition showcases original voices in contemporary cinema.
The selection will include the world premiere of âBradâs Status,â written and directed by Mike White and starring Ben Stiller.
This yearâs program will open with âThe Death of Stalin,â directed and co-written by Armando Iannucci. With a cast that includes Jason Isaacs, Rupert Friend, Michael Palin and Andrea Riseborough, the movie is the first from Iannucci since 2009's âIn the Loopâ and the creation of the TV series âVeep.â
The section will close with Australian filmmaker Warwick Thorntonâs period western "Sweet Country," starring Sam Neill and Bryan Brown. The film was previously announced as part of t he main competition at the upcoming Venice International Film Festival.
Other notable films include new works from Austriaâs Barbara Albert and Englandâs Clio Barnard.
âThe films unveiled today embody our bold vision for the program, and our ongoing commitment to showcase artistic and inventive directors that fearlessly push boundaries,â said Piers Handling, director and chief executive of TIFF, in a statement. âThe 12 titles exemplify bravery, dynamism and a unique voice in storytelling that we look for when curating the Platform program.â
âPlatform,â Cameron Bailey, TIFF's artistic director, said in a statement, âis the place to look for the distinct stamp of today's most interesting directors as they establish their reputations."
Last yearâs selection included Barry Jenkinsâ âMoonlight,â which went on to win three Academy Awards, including best picture; Pablo Larrainâs âJackie,â which earned three Oscar nominations; and Wil liam Oldroydâs recently released âLady Macbeth.â
The jury for this yearâs Platform section will be Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige, Polish filmmaker Malgorzata Szumowska and German filmmaker Wim Wenders.

The 2017 Toronto International Film Festival is set for Sept. 7-17.
