Ryanair's new seats which give passengers more leg room

Ryanair has unveiled the designs for its new seats, and there's good and bad news.

The good news: they offer an inch of extra legroom, 31 inches up from 30, while British Airways will be reducing theirs to 29 as of next year.

The bad news: the seats still won't come equipped with pockets on their backs, meaning passengers will continue to struggle with the faff of stowing their belongings.

The seats, which will be installed on the budget airline's new fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 200 will also be slimmer, meaning the aircraft will have 197 seats rather than 189.

The new planes are due to be delivered in Spring 2019.

So why no pockets?

Essentially so that it gives cleaners less rubbish to clear up after landing and saves valuable time when preparing the plane for its next load of passengers.

A spokesman told The Telegraph: 'Since 2004 Ryanair seats have not included seat-back pockets, allowing us to maintain our industry-leading 25-minute turnaround, and reduce cleaning costs.

He also somewhat surprisingly said that pockets were not a feature customers have been requesting.

Ryanair said in a statement: 'The Boeing 737 MAX 'Gamechanger' aircraft will have more space (more legroom and overhead lockers) due to Boeing's redesign of the aircraft to remove the rear galley and relocate the two rear toilets into that space.

The lack of pockets also makes the aircraft lighter - which equates to lower fuel costs. Pictured is Ryanair's new Boeing 737 MAX 200

'This redesign combined with these Zodiac slimline seats will allow an additional eight seats per aircraft and Ryanair customers will enjoy a roomier 31 inch seat pitch â€" more legroom than British Airways and Lufthansa economy seats.'

In 2012, the airline reduced the size of its in-flight magazine, introduced lighter trolleys, served less ice in drinks, and even encouraged its staff not to pile on the pounds.
