Glitter phone cases recalled after causing chemical burns

Some 275,000 mobile phone cases sold by several popular fashion brands, including Victoria's Secret, Nordstrom and Henri Bendel, are being recalled after causing chemical burns.

The iPhone cases all contain glitter floating in liquid on the back of the plastic case, with several different designs sold by the fashion houses.

Dozens of users have suffered blisters and burns on their face and body when the liquid leaked out of the case while they used their phones.

The North American recall concerns 263,000 cases sold in the United States, 11,400 were sold in Canada and 400 in Mexico.

The cases are all made of plastic and contain glitter which floats in liquid on the back of the covers - a design which has become popular in recent months.

They were sold online and in stores nationwide at Amazon, Henri Bendel, MixBin, Nordstrom Rack, Tory Burch and Victoria’s Secret from October 2015 through June 2017, costing between $15 and $65.

The recall follows 24 reports worldwide of owners suffering skin irritation or chemical burns as a result of liquid leaking from inside the plastic cases.

< p class="mol-para-with-font">The company which produces the cases for the fashion brands, MixBin Electronics, says 19 of these reports are from the U.S.

'One consumer reported permanent scarring from a chemical burn and another consumer reported chemical burns and swelling to her leg, face, neck, chest, upper body and hands,' the company said in a statement.

The leaks are believed to be caused by a manufacturing error during production in China.

The designs being recalled are all listed on MixBin's website, and the company urges owners to immediately cease using the case and to contact them for a full refund.

Amelia Yare, 13, woke with burns across her stomach after the phone cover leaked

A 13-year-old British girl reported suffering chemical burns after her Victoria's Secret case leaked in May this year.

Amelia Yare, from Stockton-on-Tees, north-east England, woke with huge burns across her stomach after the mobile phone cover seeped 'petrol-like' liquid onto her skin.

The teenager, from Stockton-on-Tees, north-east England, had fallen asleep on her iPhone, and the glitter case had cracked and leaked overnight.

Her mother said Amelia had been left with 'golf-ball sized blisters' on her stomach and hips, leaving her in agony.

At the time of the incident, a spokesperson for Victoria's Secret said the company were looking into the matter.
