Labour MP is hit with a brick by a âmotorbike thugâ
Steve McCabe, member for Birmingham Selly Oak, posted a picture of his 'very sore and swollen face' after getting a brick in the face
A Labour MP has been smashed in the face with a brick by a gang on motorbikes.
Steve McCabe, 61, member for Birmingham Selly Oak, posted a picture of his 'very sore and swollen face' last night as police launched an investigation.
He also published images of the two men involved, who were wearing full-face helmets, and asked the public help him identify them to detectives.Â
He tweeted: 'Tonight nursing a very sore & swollen face. I was struck with a brick by a motorbike thug in Greenford Rd. Have given full statement to police.'
The MP urged locals to help track the motorbike riders down, tweeting: 'Sure somebody recognises these two. All I need are names & addresses. Send them to me anonymously & I'll do the rest with the police.'
Describing the incident, Mr McCabe told the Press Association: 'I was out with a few Labour volunteers to do a spot of door-knocking and a couple of characters came down the road and started doing wheelies in the middle of the road.
'I shouted at them to pack it in. One of them got off the bike and chucked a stone at me and other one chucked something at the side of my head.
'It could have been an awful lot worse - I regard myself in that respect as fortunate.'
Numerous complaints have been made about the 'menace' of anti-social behaviour by bikers in the area, Mr McCabe added.Â
The MP also published images of the two men involved, who were wearing full-face helmets, and asked the public help him identify them to detectives
Mr McCabe tweeted details of the incident and said that he wanted the public's help to find them
'These are really quite nasty, violent thugs,' the MP said of his attackers.
'Somebody clearly knows who they are - the problem is that people are terrified of these thugs.
'It is a big issue in south Birmingham, they are terrorising neighbourhoods, but I don't think there is a direct connection in that they knew who I was.
'I think that's just the way they treat anybody who dares to challenge their behaviour.'
West Midlands Police have confirmed officers are also appealing for witnesses after the incident at about 6.30pm on Monday.Â
Mr McCabe received messages of sympathy from colleagues across the parliamentary spectrum following the incident.
Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner said: 'That's shocking Steve, that really could have been a very lot worse! I really hope the police find the culprit.'
Jo Swinson, deputy Liberal Democrat leader, tweeted: 'Horrific! Hope they catch them asap. TLC, hope you feel better soon.'
Tory MP Tom Tugendhat tweeted: 'I'm so sorry to hear that. I wish you a speedy recovery and that the police catch these thugs.'
Last month Theresa May ordered an independent inquiry into the 'horrific' intimidation of MPs.
The Prime Minister pledged to 'stamp out' abuse faced by MPs and candidates as she said many had suffered 'horrific' intimidation, bullying and harassment in the general election campaign.
MPs on all sides have been subjected to various types of abuse including homophobic and anti-Semitic threats. Â
